A gut health doctor shared his go-to breakfast — a simple, four-ingredient smoothie that his whole family enjoys.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz shared the smoothie recipe on Instagram, and said: "We all love easy, quick options, and I have a simple, go-to, daily breakfast that gets the job done."

"Smoothies are an amazing way to get your kids to pack in more fresh fruits and veggies. Our family loves to 'cheers' at the breakfast table before we start our day," he added in the caption to his post.

4-ingredient smoothie recipe

  • Frozen blueberries

  • Bananas

  • Broccoli sprouts

  • Soy milk

To make it, all you need to do is pop the ingredients in a blender and "hit the buzz button," Bulsiewicz said.

He said he also tops his smoothies with ground flaxseed, hemp seeds, or walnuts.

A dietitian said smoothies should feature fats, protein, and fiber

Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine previously told Business Insider that smoothies should contain fats, protein, and fiber to be nutritionally balanced.

She advised against smoothies containing solely fruit, which can lead to blood sugar spikes and crashes. For healthy people without diabetes, these may negatively affect their focus or energy levels.

Ludlam-Raine recommended making smoothies with a couple of different types of fruit, for instance a small banana and a handful of berries, as well as milk or a non-dairy alternative, and some greens.

Extras such as Greek yogurt, nut butter, oats, or protein powder can provide more flavor and nutrients, she said.

"These combined help to slow down the release of the energy from the blended fruit," Ludlam-Raine said.

Bulsiewicz's smoothie, for instance, gets protein from the soy milk and greens from the broccoli sprouts, while the added nuts and seeds on top provide healthy fats.
