Overlanding vehicle maker EarthCruiser has teamed up with GMC to turn the Hummer EV into a RV.
Hummer, the brand once known for its gas-guzzling SUVs, now sells electric vehicles.
The electric RV market is still nascent with a handful of concepts and startups still in the works.
GMC and overlanding vehicle maker EarthCruiser have teamed up to turn the Hummer EV into a tricked out electrified RV ready to pummel its overlanding competitors.
If there's one thing both companies do well, it's building giant, boxy, flashy vehicles. So of course the two are working together to upfit the iconic electric Hummer into a beefy home on wheels, debuting on Thursday at the Overland Expo in Colorado.
Oregon-based EarthCruiser builds big, buff overlanding RVs available in the US, like its Ford-based Terranova model shown below.
The price of EarthCruiser's off-grid, off-road vehicles aren't for the everyday RVers: Its overlanding trucks start at a cool $350,000.
Hummer is best-known for its line of gas-guzzling, military-inspired SUVs. But now the brand has gone full EV.
It sells an SUV and a pickup truck, which the EarthCruiser camper fits onto.
Electric vehicles like the Hummer EV are everywhere these days. But RVs still run on gas, by and large.
Legacy companies like Winnebago and Mercedes-Benz Vans have unveiled concept electric campers. But for the most part, they've been just that: concepts, at least for now.
Meanwhile, startups like Grounded are building electric modular camper vans based on the Ford E-Transit.
So to expedite the electrification of RVing, EarthCruiser isn't building one from scratch. Instead, it's integrating its carbon-fiber tiny home into the Hummer EV chassis.
The insulated pop-up roof means the "home" can be conveniently lowered to 7.5 feet-tall when the vehicle is toughing out off-grid terrain. When it's popped up and in "Camp Mode," the home will stand at 9.75 feet-tall and a little over 18 feet long.
But just because it's a home in a box doesn't mean it'll be lacking in amenities.
EarthCruiser is known for building homes that can fit on four wheels — its Hummer EV upfit will be no different.
The vehicle will have a refrigerator and freezer, induction cooktop, and portable toilet, among other comforts.
A series of outlets will keep tech charged on the road, while all of the storage units — including some under-bed — will keep everyone's belongings tucked away while the vehicle is navigating bumpy trails.
The sink and shower will source fresh water from a 13.5 gallon tank and dump the dirty water into a seven-gallon one.
And most importantly, the upfit will include a full-size bed.
Despite all of these add-ons, EarthCruiser says its Hummer RV can stay off-grid for about a week.
The pop-up home will come with a power system rounded out with 605 watts of solar panels, a 1,500-watt inverter, and a six-kilowatt-hour lithium 12-volt battery.
The Hummer EV can drive up to 329 miles on a full charge, according to the EPA. But expect less due to the camper's extra weight and drag.
But at least road-trippers will have somewhere comfy to kick back during charging stops. You'll be able to buy the Hummer EV upfit in 2024 through EarthCruiser.
