3 Minutes with Lucy Cohen

Lucy is not only the Co-Founder of Mazuma, the UK’s first ever accountancy subscription service but is passionate about small and micro-businesses, and their impact in the UK economy.

We grabbed 3 minutes to get to know a bit about Lucy, her motivations and career…

 1. How did you get into the profession?  

I’d taken a year out before university to work in film and tv, a career I thought I wanted. Turned out that I hated it! So I went to careers office who suggested accountancy. It seemed a reasonable idea so I marched over the road to a hotel and demanded a job in their accounts office. As luck would have it, their purchase ledger clerk had just left and the rest is history! I did my qualifications through an apprenticeship as I worked and never looked back.

2. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? 

When faced with a problem, think about if it will matter in 5 years. If it won’t, then don’t sweat it too much now. This forces you to think about long-term planning and not get bogged down in the minutiae.

3. What do you love most about the accounting and finance industry? 

That it can applied in so many different ways. Firm to firm we see huge differences in culture and output. We see technology leading the way in innovation and accountants embracing it. It’s a space that’s full of potential and I love that. There’s a home for everyone!

4. What do you see as key trends for the accounting sector in the coming year? 

Solidifying your company’s culture is going to be a big deal. As recruitment remains challenging, this will be an area that people focus on.

5. How important is Accountex to you and the sector?

It’s a beachhead event in the calendar each year. Somewhere to meet up with peers, see best practice and scope out new solutions for your firm. Not to be missed!
