Employment Hero is celebrating National Payroll Week by helping their partners make payroll carbon-negative.
In a partnership with tree-planting B Corp Carma, one tree will be planted for every Employment Hero partner in its network.
Carma will pay veterans from the Green Task Force to plant the trees in the UK, supporting their employment and cleaning the air that these employees breathe.
This will make payroll “carbon negative” for employers, meaning the service will not just offset the small amount of carbon involved in data storage, but take far more carbon out of the atmosphere.
Each tree is estimated to take around 0.7 tonnes of carbon out of the atmosphere over its lifetime, or about 21kg a year. Meanwhile cloud data storage for the payroll for the average partner is estimated to cause just three grams of carbon emissions a year – meaning the trees will not just cover off these emissions but go far further.
Employment Hero decided to plant the trees this National Payroll Week as part of a wider celebration of the role payroll professionals play in the wider economy for employment.
Despite these efforts, payroll is more than just a week and there’s much more that can be done to reduce environmental impact in the future. It’s every month, every payday. Employment Hero are excited about this initiative and are planning to do more with Carma.
Damon Anderson, UK MD of Employment Hero, commented:
“Payroll is often seen as a boring necessity rather than a space for strategic thinking. We aim to change that perception this National Payroll Week by showcasing how the routine process of ensuring accurate employee pay aligns with a company’s broader ESG goals.”
“As climate change gains more attention from customers, governments, and employees, many businesses have undertaken impressive decarbonisation strategies. However, delving into ‘scope 3’ emissions can be eye-opening for CEOs, revealing their business’s potential carbon footprint.”
“Our tree planting partnership with Carma taps into an unexpected source – payroll. Cloud payroll’s emissions are minuscule, so instead of merely offsetting them, we’ve taken a step further. Payroll within our partner network is now ‘carbon negative,’ removing more emissions from the atmosphere than it contributes. The trees we plant in the UK also purify the very air our employees breathe.”
Jim Holland, CEO and co-founder of Carma, commented:
“For the UK to reach its net zero goals and help the planet get back on track, we’ll need to find opportunities for decarbonisation everywhere – even payroll. I’m delighted that Employment Hero is partnering with us to plant trees right here in the UK. These trees will help clean up our air and provide jobs for veterans through the Green Task Force – it’s a real win-win.”
Employment Hero will be exhibiting at Accountex Summit Manchester on the 19th September 2023 on stand G17.
