From reactive reporting to proactive advisory: How AI is reshaping the role of accountants

The accounting profession is at a turning point. As businesses navigate an increasingly complex economic landscape, they are looking to their accountants more and more for trusted advice to help them anticipate challenges and make informed decisions about growth. Yet growing workloads and increasing client expectations make it difficult for accountants to fulfil and charge for these services.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to change this dynamic by taking on time-consuming administrative tasks, streamlining workflows and surfacing financial insights that might otherwise require hours of manual work.

For accounting firms, intelligent systems that bring together AI, trusted financial data and the expertise of accountants presents an opportunity to move further towards a more proactive, insight-led approach to client work.

Moving beyond the retrospective view

Traditionally, much of an accountant’s work required financial information to be collected, reconciled and analysed before insights could be shared with clients. While these responsibilities remain fundamental, opportunities to intervene were often identified after challenges had emerged. AI can help accountants identify financial risks and opportunities earlier.

Consider a business facing a potential cash flow shortfall. Rather than discovering the issue during a routine review, intelligent systems can flag early warning signs, giving accountants the opportunity to engage with clients sooner and explore possible solutions.

Making proactive advisory possible at scale

While the benefits of advisory services are well understood, delivering them consistently across an entire client base remains challenging.

By bringing together financial information and insights across an entire client portfolio, intelligent systems powered by AI, can help accountants identify where an intervention is needed most. Instead of logging into individual client files manually, these systems can continuously analyse data across the entire client roster.

We are already seeing early signs of this shift. Early adopters of Intuit Intelligence are reporting that accountants are spending 30% more time on client advisory work, demonstrating AI’s potential to redirect capacity towards greater value.

Intuit Intelligence is built directly into QuickBooks and Intuit Accountant Suite.  It automates tasks and analytics in the background, giving instant answers. Through chat, users can ask any question and have AI complete tasks without having to switch tools or spend time on manual entry.

Building trust into the next generation of AI

As AI becomes more deeply embedded in financial workflows, questions around trust, accuracy and control become increasingly important.

Our 2026 AI Impact Report found that trust, rather than cost, is now the biggest barrier to deeper AI adoption among businesses, even as regular AI usage has climbed to nearly 70%.

Businesses are increasingly comfortable using AI for everyday tasks, but remain cautious about handing over decisions with significant financial consequences.

Maintaining oversight is essential. AI can analyse information, identify patterns and recommend actions, while humans provide the context, experience and professional understanding needed to determine the right course of action.

This is why the future of AI in accountancy must be built around transparency, accuracy and human control.

A new chapter for the profession

The evolution of AI represents a significant opportunity for the accounting profession, but realising its potential will require firms to think beyond efficiency alone.

As intelligent systems take on more routine work, accountants can focus more deeply on interpreting information, providing context and helping clients make confident decisions.

Ultimately, the future of accountancy is not about AI replacing the trusted adviser. It is about giving accountants the tools, insights and capacity to become even more valuable partners to the businesses they serve.
