Navigating the talent shortage

A recruitment and talent pipeline crisis is afflicting the accountancy profession. But that doesn’t mean you and your practice should stand by and let it happen.

How are you and your practice navigating the talent shortage?

It is a question that applies not just to UK practitioners and Accountex attendees, but globally. Practices across the world are facing up to a resourcing and capacity crisis.

The reasons for the talent shortage are many and varied, but the key takes from the Advancetrack 2026 Accounting Talent Index are:

· Accountancy firms are now turning away clients because they lack staff;

· Firms are reporting service lines are operating at or near full capacity; and

· Many say their ability to grow is being slowed by recruitment challenges.

Sadly, fighting against a capacity headwind has impacted practitioners’ mental health. Practitioners have suffered stress or anxiety because of the talent shortage.

Taking control of your firm’s destiny:

But there are strategies and tactics that can be followed to mitigate the resourcing crisis.

Many of the 500 respondents to the Accounting Talent Index are:

· Improving workflows and processes;

· Adopting new cloud accounting or practice management technology;

· Recruiting more junior staff and focusing on developing talent internally;

· Investing in training, professional development and/or upskilling programmes; and

· Outsourcing/offshoring accounting tasks.

Practice leaders must be brave; to do more, and differently. They have to fundamentally reengineer how their practice does things, being laser-guided about what they offer and to whom. They must understand where the value is in their work and price accordingly.
