From finance professional to founder – growing a hospitality business to six London sites during a pandemic. Bharti Radix has done it all, and now she’s sharing what she’s learned.
Ahead of her FD Show seminar, we caught up with Bharti on career pivots, the future of the CFO, and why finance might just be the best route to the top.
What inspired you to get into the finance profession?
My parents saw it as one of those ‘solid’ professions and they both worked in finance too (one in credit control and the other in accounts payable). I did Business Studies as my degree and we had to choose a stream for the final year – I got a taster of marketing, HR, operations and finance – so finance was the way I went!
What’s one piece of advice you would give a finance professional who wants to become a CEO?
Definitely have an open mind. People look at finance professionals as the ‘bean counters’, the ones that won’t spend money where it’s needed.
If you want to be a CEO you have to step out of that mindset and consider all aspects of a business.
It’s even better if you can get work experience in all departments so you really get to understand every part of the business from all points of view.
As the role of the CFO and other finance professionals keeps evolving, what do you think the finance profession will look like in 10 years’ time?
I think more CFO’s will become CEO’s, especially as AI takes over and makes the CFO role become increasingly efficient with the data available and the detail that can be dug into with much more speed and accuracy.
I believe that will push CFO’s to look for more than the CFO role. The natural progression from that is to be CEO.
The rest of the finance team will have a lesser headcount and reports will be more automated with transactional processes not needing manual intervention any further.
The finance team will be able to look beyond the reports and reporting and have more meaningful interaction with the rest of the business.
What are you most looking forward to at the FD Show?
Meeting more finance people and make some meaningful connections.
What do you want visitors to take away from your seminar session?
To feel inspired to push forward if they want to move into a CEO role. To know that it can be done and it can be a successful move.
