Armie Hammer is back in the spotlight — kind of.

Hammer's ex-wife, Elizabeth Chambers, stars in the new Freeform docu-drama "Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise," which tracks a group of people living on the biggest of the Cayman Islands. A mix of locals and expats like Chambers, the series wastes no time in mining the biggest, if tangential, controversy: Hammer and Chambers' split, and the scandal leading up to it.

Chambers filed for divorce from Hammer in 2020. In 2021, claims that Hammer had a cannibalism fetish, as well as allegations of sexual assault, circulated. Hammer stepped down from a slate of projects, later saying in a 2023 interview with Air Mail that he was an "asshole." He denied the sexual assault allegations.

To be clear, Hammer doesn't appear on "Grand Cayman," though Chambers and her relationship with him are subject to scrutiny in the show's premiere, airing on Tuesday. Here's what we know about where Hammer is now.

Hammer's reputation tanked in 2021 after several women made allegations about him

In January 2021, a woman named Effie (who Air Mail reported is Efrosina Angelova) posted messages that she alleged were from Hammer to her Instagram account, @houseofeffie. Those messages, which Business Insider was unable to verify at the time, contained cannibalistic fantasies. Effie later accused Hammer in a press conference of raping her, and other women also came forward with allegations about Hammer, Air Mail reported.

Hammer denied the allegations, and in June 2023, the Los Angeles District Attorney's office said that it had decided not to file charges against him. Prosecutors said at the time that they did not have the requisite evidence to support the allegations in court, Business Insider previously reported.

As a consequence of the allegations that began in January 2021 and the subsequent fallout, Hammer dropped out of multiple projects, including "Shotgun Wedding," in which he was set to star opposite Jennifer Lopez. He was also dropped by his talent agency, William Morris Endeavor the same year. He has not appeared in any film or television projects since the Kenneth Branagh film "Death on the Nile," which was filmed in 2019 and released in February 2022.

In his time away from Hollywood, Hammer has worked as a sober companion, and his divorce was finalized

In July 2022, Variety reported that Hammer was working in the Caymans to sell time-shares because his other streams of income had dried up. But Hammer told Air Mail in the February 2023 interview that he had shadowed a friend who sold time-shares, but said that he wasn't "making any money."

At the time of the Air Mail interview, Hammer, who entered rehab in May 2021, said that he was working as a sober companion, moving in with someone who had recently exited rehab. He told the publication that "no one will touch me" in the entertainment industry, for fear of being linked to him and his myriad controversies.

In June 2023, some of Hammer's legal troubles were also resolved. After the LA district attorney's office didn't pursue charges against him, he posted a statement to Instagram saying that he was "very grateful," Business Insider previously reported.

"I look forward to beginning what will be a long, difficult process of putting my life back together now that my name is cleared," he wrote in a now-unavailable Instagram post.

That same month, Hammer and Chambers finalized their divorce, each waiving their right to a divorce trial. In one legal document, Hammer agreed that he and Chambers had an agreement "regarding their property and their marriage or domestic partnership rights, including support," Business Insider previously reported.

Hammer has also kept his personal life private but may have briefly been engaged

Hammer has posted sparingly on Instagram since his fall from grace. Currently, his account has three publicly available posts, all from November 2023. As the South China Morning Post reported, Hammer has also posted on his Instagram story in the past, including posting a quote from Pema Chödrön, the American Buddhist nun, about growing from difficult circumstances.

Hammer also appeared to have been briefly engaged to a woman named Marina Gris, who posted to Instagram in January 2024 that she and Hammer had broken up, People reported. According to People, a since-removed Instagram post appeared to show that Hammer had proposed to Gris in October 2023. Hammer did not address their relationship at the time or confirm their breakup.

A representative for Hammer did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
