- In 2021, Joe Biden and his family got rid of their dog, Major, after he bit a Secret Service agent.
- Two years later, the New York Post reports his other dog Commander has bitten several people.
- A White House spokesperson said Commander will be receiving additional training moving forward.
In 2021, President Joe Biden and his family said farewell to their dog, Major, after repeated instances of aggressive behavior, including at least one biting incident. Now, the dog the Biden family replaced Major with appears to have its own aggressive traits, the New York Post and CNN report.
According to the Post, Commander, a German shepherd gifted to Biden by his brother, has bitten several members of the Secret Service and other people working around the White House since late 2021. CNN reports Commander was invovled in at least 10 biting incidents.
On one occasion, the White House's medical team thought the wounds of a Secret Service officer were serious enough to require medical attention and sent the officer to a hospital.
In a statement to NBC News' Kelly O'Donnell, a White House spokesperson appeared to confirm the biting incidents reported by the New York Post and said Commander will undergo additional training.
"The White House complex is a unique and often stressful environment for family pets, and the First Family is working through ways to make this situation better for everyone," said Elizabeth Alexander, the communications director for first lady Dr. Jill Biden. "They have been partnering with the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff on additional leashing protocols and training, as well as establishing designated areas for Commander to run and exercise. According to the Secret Service, each incident referenced was treated similarly to comparable workplace injuries, with relevant notifications and procedures followed. The President and First Lady are incredibly grateful to the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for all they do to keep them, their family, and the country safe."
After reports circulated that Biden's dog Major had attacked a Secret Service agent, the president reportedly grew distrustful of his security detail and "wasn't buying the details" reported by the agent following the attack.
"Look, the Secret Service are never up here," Biden reportedly told a friend about where Major's attack were said to have happened. "It didn't happen."
