British Government Releases Documents on the Appointment of Disgraced Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador – PM Starmer Was Warned That the Epstein Friend Posed a ‘Reputational Risk’

Failing PM Starmer insisted on nominating Mandelson as US Ambassador – and almost lost his premiership over it.

Failing PM Starmer knew the extent of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein before appointing him as US ambassador.

Peter Mandelson thought himself immune to the ‘Epstein curse’ – but he was not.

As a result, he was fired from his ambassadorship, had to resign from the Labour Party and the House of Lords, his consulting firm collapsed, and to top it all, he was arrested over his Epstein ties, as he is criminally investigated for ‘Misconduct in Public Office’.

Today (11), after some time has passed and the ‘Epstein crisis’ has subsided in the UK, the British government released the first batch of documents covering the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington.

And, as it was expected, it’s reviving questions about Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s misguided judgment in appointing a ‌close friend of Jeffrey Epstein in such a key post.

Reuters reported:

“The publication of the first tranche of documents covering the vetting of Mandelson, under police investigation for allegedly leaking government documents to the late sex offender, does little to reduce the pressure on Starmer, who is under fire over the appointment and a series of policy U-turns.

The more than 100 pages of documents suggested concerns were raised about the ‘reputational risks’ in appointing Mandelson, particularly over his friendship with Epstein, but also his previous resignations from government and his support for closer ties with China.”

“Starmer has expressed regret over the appointment, saying the Labour veteran had created a ‘litany of deceit’ about his ties to Epstein, an apology that did little to quieten opposition voices saying the prime minister should step down.”

Mandelson and his ‘best pal’ Epstein go shopping in the US Virgin Islands.

The Telegraph reported:

“A due diligence document drawn up in Dec 2024 before Lord Mandelson’s appointment to Washington noted that the peer had a ‘particularly close relationship’ with Jeffrey Epstein.

The dossier, which includes a link to a Telegraph story from Jan 2024 that detailed the links ‘extensively’, explicitly warned Sir Keir that Lord Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein posed a ‘general reputational risk’.

The Prime Minister, who also knew that the peer had maintained ties with Epstein even after the financier was convicted of child sex offences, proceeded to appoint Lord Mandelson as ambassador regardless.”
