The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has officially launched a full-scale investigation into the University of California, Berkeley, after the school’s failure to protect conservative students and guests attending a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event Monday night erupted into chaos.
In a letter sent Tuesday, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon notified UC President James B. Milliken and the UC Board of Regents that the DOJ is investigating the university’s handling of the incident and potential violations of federal civil rights laws, specifically the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
“Mob assault and thuggish intimidation of attendees exercising their First Amendment rights are unacceptable,” Dhillon stated, emphasizing the DOJ’s commitment to protecting citizens from politically motivated violence and suppression.

The DOJ letter specifically cites potential breaches of a 2018 federal settlement, Young America’s Foundation v. Napolitano, which required UC Berkeley to uphold free speech rights and ensure adequate security for conservative speakers.
Dhillon’s letter demands that the university preserve all records related to the event, including:
-
All communications between campus officials and student groups concerning the event or protests.
-
All security policies, manuals, and staffing records for November 10.
-
All video, audio, or digital recordings from UC equipment or personnel.
-
All complaints, incident reports, and investigations connected to the violence.
The Civil Rights Division is also reviewing whether Berkeley’s repeated pattern of hostility toward conservative events, combined with its leniency toward left-wing demonstrators, constitutes systemic viewpoint discrimination.
A bloody fight broke out near the UC Berkeley campus on Monday, just hours before the TPUSA event featuring Dr. Frank Turek and actor Rob Schneider, part of the organization’s nationwide “This Is The Turning Point” tour.
Video obtained by Fox News Digital shows masked agitators, many wearing keffiyehs and carrying far-left signs, surrounding attendees and brawling in the streets. One man was seen with blood streaming down his face as police struggled to regain control.
Officers were later seen putting on riot gear, including face shields and batons, as the violent crowd continued to grow. Witnesses reported that Antifa-linked protesters targeted attendees trying to enter the venue, shouting obscenities and physically blocking entrances.
