Elon Musk wants you to know you can trust his new AI company.
The Tesla CEO launched his much-anticipated AI play last week, a company called xAI, which seeks to "understand the true nature of the universe."
In a Friday Twitter Spaces, the billionaire clarified the company's goal was to build a "good AGI" that is "maximally curious" and "truth-seeking." He described the business as being in competition with major players in the space such as OpenAI and Google, saying his company shared the goal of creating useful AI.
Musk said competition in the AI space was valuable to prevent one company from dominating development, adding that competition made companies more honest.
Musk clarified during the discussion that, unlike established rivals, his company was just starting out and called the venture "really embryonic."
The Twitter boss has been critical of OpenAI, a company he cofounded in 2015. He has accused some of the company's content moderation for its AI-powered chatbot of being biased and has previously said he wants to create a version of the bot called "TruthGPT."
During the Spaces discussion, Musk said xAI's technology may give answers that people find "controversial." Musk added there was a "significant danger" in training an AI to be politically correct or "not say what it actually thinks is true." He promised his own company would allow its AI model to say what it really "believes."
The billionaire acknowledged that this may result in some criticism, but reiterated his goal was to build an AI that rigorously pursued the truth.
