Jerrod Carmichael said he got $500,000 for hosting the Golden Globes. Here's how that compares to the fees of other award show hosts, like Jimmy Kimmel.

  • Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael said he was paid $500,000 for the gig during his monologue.
  • That's far more than what awards show hosts are typically paid.
  • For instance, Jimmy Kimmel said last year that he was paid $15,000 when he hosted the Oscars.

The Golden Globes returned to NBC on Tuesday for its 80th annual ceremony with comedian Jerrod Carmichael on hosting duty.

Carmichael didn't hold back when it came to skewering the Globes voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which was aiming for a comeback after recent scandals.

During a brutally honest opening monologue, in which he recounted being asked to host, he pulled the curtain back on how much he was paid: $500,000, he said.

Carmichael noted how he was "unfireable" because the Globes "haven't had a Black host in 79 years."

NBC dropped the Globes live telecast last year after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation reported that the HFPA, a group of international entertainment journalists, had no Black members.

An HFPA representative did not immediately return a request for comment about the number from Insider.

The hosting fee Carmichael claimed to earn is much higher than the typical compensation. Vanity Fair reported in 2013 that hosts' pay for awards shows "generally tops out in the low six figures" — and even that is higher than what some celebrities and reports have alluded to.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2013 that hosts are paid $15,000 to $25,000 for the Oscars, the minimum negotiated by the actors' union SAG-AFTRA. (Seth MacFarlane, the host that year, was paid more than the minimum, according to THR).

Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the Oscars in 2017 and 2018, and is returning to host this year, backed that number up on his show "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last March, saying that he was paid $15,000 for the gig.

"It sounds like a lot for one night, but it's months of work leading up to it," Kimmel said.

The minimum for hosting the Grammys is even lower. A SAG-AFTRA spokesperson told Forbes in 2017 that the Grammys host is required to be paid at least $5,000.

Alec Baldwin, who co-hosted the Oscars in 2010 with Steve Martin, told THR in 2013 that hosting was a "thankless job" and that he would "never" do it again.

"They don't pay you any money," Baldwin told THR. "The Oscars pay you like chicken feed."
