Surface Magazine's parent company is suing Kanye West, who formally goes by Ye, for more than $145,000 over missed payments for a rental space, court documents show.
The rapper rented a Miami event space in January for a large-scale but unknown recording project.
Ye and his collaborators, including his manager Steven Victor, general manager Laurence Chandler, producer 88-Keys, and songwriter Pardi were part of the project and are named in the lawsuit filed on October 24.
In early January, the group contacted Surface Area, a showroom that sells curated art, design objects, and furniture, and also serves as an event rental space. They wanted to rent the space for a month, documents say.
Ye had special requirements, such as tailoring the decor to his "desired color scheme," per the lawsuit. The rental company's staff also removed nearly $50 million worth of furniture, artwork, and design objects from the space.
The rapper and his team signed an agreement on January 5 with the venue for a 25-day rental totaling $125,000, expenses of $20,000, and four new office chairs for $813, the lawsuit says. 88-Keys and Pardi, also named as defendants in the lawsuit, brought sound equipment into the space before settling the bill.
The company invoiced Ye and his team on January 7, but claim it has never received payment. The lawsuit says he failed "to pay any amounts whatsoever." Surface Media is seeking $145,813, as well as reimbursement for the lawsuit fees.
Representatives for both Ye and Surface Media didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The rapper has recently been under heavy scrutiny following antisemitic comments he made. As a result, brands like Vogue and Adidas have cut ties with the singer.
