Poll Finds Majority of Americans View Democrats as an ‘Open Borders’ Party

A group of migrants, including families and children, walks along a road while a border patrol agent stands nearby, highlighting immigration challenges.

A new poll found that the majority of Americans believe that the Democratic Party supports “open borders.”

The Harvard/Harris survey conducted from March 25-26 found that 56 percent of respondents think that the Democrats support open borders, while 44 percent believe they do not.

Further, only a slight majority — 52 to 48 percent — believe that Democrats support deporting violent criminals here illegally, while 79 percent of respondents think Republicans back the deportation of criminals.

The poll sample size was 2,009 registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 1.99 percent.

Democrats have refused to fund the Department of Homeland Security without separating out Customs and Border Protection, as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

They have cited the deaths of Minneapolis immigration enforcement protesters, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, in January after the two inserted themselves in the middle of ICE operations in their city.

Republicans have agreed to some reforms, including having all ICE agents wear body cameras, but have refused to agree to Democrats’ demands that officers obtain a judicial warrant for each illegal immigrant apprehension, wear a unique ID number, and not wear face masks.

Border Czar Tom Homan said that officers must have a degree of anonymity to protect themselves and their families due to protest groups seeking to dox them.

Last week, the Senate passed a DHS appropriations bill with Democratic support that did not fund ICE and parts of CBP, CNBC reported.

On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected that proposal and instead passed legislation that funded all of DHS for two months.

“The Republicans are not going to be any part of any effort to reopen our borders or to stop immigration enforcement. We are going to deport dangerous criminal illegal aliens because it is a basic function of the government,” he told reporters.

“The Democrats fundamentally disagree,” he added. “The Senate Democrats have foisted upon this appropriations process their radical, crazy agenda. The root of this entire Democrat shutdown is a demand to reopen the border and to protect criminal illegal aliens.”

On Wednesday, Johnson posted on social media, “In the coming days, Republicans in the Senate and House will be following through on the President’s directive by fully funding the entire Department of Homeland Security on two parallel tracks: through the appropriations process and through the reconciliation process.”

Passing legislation through budget reconciliation only requires a majority vote in the Senate and the House, and is not subject to the Senate’s 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster.

Johnson concluded, “In following this two-track approach, the Republican Congress will fully reopen the Department, make sure all federal workers are paid, and specifically fund immigration enforcement and border security for the next three years so that those law-enforcement activities can continue uninhibited.”

“In return, Democrats will once again demonstrate to the American people their support for open borders and keeping criminal illegal immigrants in America,” he added.
