Although her city is facing a massive $50 million deficit, far-left Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is funding (on the taxpayers’ dime) a program handing out vouchers to ‘queer and trans migrants and refugees’ so that they can treat themselves to massages, yoga classes, and ‘creative healing.’
In a social media post, OUTnewcomers, a small, Boston-based nonprofit organization that supports LGBTQ+ migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the Greater Boston area, shared their Belonging Matters” (Wellness Allowances) program.
A flyer for the program shared, “We’re offering $250–$500 wellness allowances for LGBTQ+ migrants in Boston to support their mental health and well-being through non-clinical care including yoga, meditation, creative healing, peer support, hair salon/ acupuncture & massages appointments and gym memberships etc.”
Apply now – @OUTNewcomers has launched intake applications for Project: Belonging Matters. Eligible applicants are those who are low income, struggling & isolated queer & trans at-risk migrants, asylum seekers & refugees residing in the @CityOfBoston @BOSImmigrants .

These vouchers must be used within Boston and prioritize low-income, isolated queer and trans migrants/asylum seekers/refugees.
OUTnewcomers is in direct partnership with the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA), a city agency under Mayor Wu.
In March 2026, MOIA awarded over $1.3 million in grants to multiple organizations (including OUTnewcomers) for legal access, wellness/mental health support, and neighborhood programs.
The majority of this money comes directly from the City of Boston’s fiscal year 2026 annual operating budget (taxpayers), with a smaller portion from private grants/donations.
OUTnewcomers was founded by Sal Khan in 2023. Khan is an openly queer migrant activist from Pakistan who describes himself as an “angry brown queer” and performs in drag under the name Miss Chilly Masala.

On May 7, 2024, Khan was taken into custody after an incident on an MBTA bus in Boston and charged with resisting arrest and trespassing.
He described it as a “major relapse,” referring to his mental health struggles with PTSD, depression, and anxiety, which he has discussed publicly.
After public backlash, OUTnewcomers responded, “Our City of Boston-funded program is modest and need-based. It provides small vouchers of $50 or less to eligible LGBTQ+ migrants living in Boston to access limited wellness supports such as haircuts, acupuncture, or massage. The program is also intended to support local Boston businesses that welcome LGBTQ+ and migrant clients and workers.”
It is unclear why the organization’s flyer specifies “$250–$500 wellness allowances,” yet their statement suggests only “small vouchers.”
