Singapore Airlines has long been a leader in ultra-long-haul flights, having operated the longest one for 16 out of the past 27 years.
The distance is 32% greater than in 1997, when South African Airways operated the longest flight at the time, connecting New York to Johannesburg. That's according to recent data published by aviation data provider OAG, which noted the longest route of the past 27 years, taking into consideration only services that operated at least twice weekly throughout the calendar year.
Take a look at the longest non-stop flight routes of the past 27 years:
1997 to 1999: New York City to Johannesburg
The flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport to O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, covered 6,925 nautical miles and it was operated by South African Airways on a Boeing 747-400. It lasted around 17 hours, according to reports at the time.

The flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Singapore Changi Airport covered 8,274 nautical miles and was operated by Singapore Airlines on an Airbus A340. 2014 to 2015: Dallas-Forth Worth to Sydney
For a couple of years, Qantas operated the longest flight in the world, spanning 7,452 nautical miles from Texas to Sydney. Qantas flew the route with both a Boeing 747 and an Airbus A380.
2016: Auckland to Dubai
Emirates only makes the list of the longest flights once, in 2016, with its 7,664 nautical miles long flight from Auckland, New Zealand, to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It used both an Airbus A380 and a Boeing 777.
2017: Auckland to Qatar
Qatar Airways held the record for the longest flight for one year only in 2017 when it covered the 7,843 nautical miles from Auckland Airport to Hamad International Airport, Doha, Qatar with a Boeing 777.
2018 to 2020: Newark to Singapore
After canceling the route in 2013, Singapore Airlines resumed its nonstop service from Newark to Singapore in 2018, covering 8,277 nautical miles on an Airbus A350.
2021 to 2023: New York City to Singapore
Only 2 nautical miles longer than the route from Newark, Singapore Airlines' flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Singapore spans 8,279 nautical miles and is currently the longest nonstop flight in the world. The route debuted at the end of 2020 and is operated with an Airbus A350.
2025: Sydney to London
Qantas is planning to set a new record with its Sydney to London Heathrow route, which is 9,190 nautical miles long and is part of what's called Project Sunrise.
