  • Andrew Tate says he's been paid more than $20,000 by Twitter.
  • The payment was part of Elon Musk's scheme to reward content creators on the platform.
  • Musk announced the plan in June and said the first round of payments would total $5 million.

Controversial influencer Andrew Tate says he's been paid more than $20,000 under Elon Musk's new scheme to reward content creators.

Tate, who is facing rape and human trafficking charges in Romania, shared a screenshot of the payment notification on Thursday saying: "Every penny goes to tatepledge.com."

The funds are paid out through Stripe, according to the screenshot, and represent a share of Twitter's ad revenue.

Tate has only been back on Twitter since November when his previous ban was lifted by its new owner, Elon Musk.

The British influencer was banned from Twitter in 2017 after being found to violate its terms of service with inflammatory tweets. Tate was one of several banned accounts that were restored to the platform under Musk.

Representatives for Twitter did not respond to Insider's request for comment with a reply that addressed the query.

Musk first announced the new payment scheme for content creators in June.

In a Twitter post, the billionaire said that "X/Twitter will start paying creators for ads served in their replies" with the first block of payments totaling $5 million. However, creators that want to participate must be verified on the platform.

According to The Washington Post, some of the first beneficiaries of the scheme appeared to be high-profile far-right influencers. For example, right-wing blogger, Ian Miles Cheong was among those boasting about their earnings.

The news left some Twitter users questioning how the beneficiaries were selected.

"My Twitter account generated 61 million impressions since Feb 3rd, 2023," Matt Navarra, a social media analyst, said on Thursday. "It's pretty lame there is no payout coming my way."
