  • The White House said Tesla will open at least 7,500 charging stations to all EVs by the end of 2024.
  • It's the first time Elon Musk's company has allowed non-Tesla vehicles to use its Superchargers.
  • EV drivers must use the Tesla app or website to use the charging stations, the White House said.

Tesla will make at least 7,500 charging stations available to all electric vehicles by the end of 2024, the White House said Wednesday.

For the first time, Elon Musk's company has committed to opening up some of its Supercharger network in the US to non-Tesla vehicles, White House officials said in a statement. Tesla's chargers have previously only been accessible to the company's own cars.

The move is part of a US government plan to make at least 500,000 chargers accessible to all EV drivers by 2030.

Tesla's chargers are expected to be spread across the US, the administration said. At least 3,500 of the 7,500 chargers will include Tesla's 250-kilowatt Superchargers on highway corridors, as well as slower Level 2 destination chargers installed at restaurants and hotels, per the statement.

EV drivers will need to use the Tesla app or website to take advantage of Superchargers, the administration said.

Tesla also agreed to more than double its US network of Superchargers, which are made in Buffalo, New York, it added.

The White House said it aimed to create a "convenient, reliable and Made-in-America electric vehicle charging network so that the great American road trip can be electrified."

Tesla has the most charging stations in the US, with more than 40,000 worldwide in total.

Reuters reported Friday that Tesla could miss out on a slice of the $7.5 billion in charger subsidies planned by President Joe Biden if it failed to open its charging network up to other carmakers.

Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
