From the architect: "A formerly unfinished, semi-basement space in the Ilioupoli neighborhood of Athens was turned into a small 603-square-foot apartment.

"Because of its sunken position and the fact that light only penetrates from one side, the space had a ‘cave’ like magical feeling that the renovation aimed to strengthen. Existing features such as the unfinished raw concrete columns, beams, and ceiling, and the steel windows and door were kept, while the small bathroom was extended and had a shower added.

"In order to not further minimize the space’s small size, there were no internal walls built. Instead, the furniture and various functional elements were arranged in such a way that they delineate the different activity areas themselves. Further visual and spatial filters such as sliding partitions, curtains, and hanging shelves were added. These create the illusion of depth, and coupled with different details and aesthetic choices create an especially pleasant and rich visual and spatial result."
