A Crisp White One-Bed Addition Is Parked Atop a Two-Car Garage in Tasmania

The elevated indoor/outdoor suite features a patio enclosed with vertical slatting that provides mountain views and privacy from neighbors.

Houses We Love: Every day we feature a remarkable space submitted by our community of architects, designers, builders, and homeowners. Have one to share? Post it here.

Project Details:

Location: New Town, Tasmania, Australia

Architect: Licht Architecture / @licht_architecture

Builder: SODA Projects

Landscape Design: Wyer & Co / @wyerandco

Engineer: Hutchings Spurr

Building Surveyor: Holdfast

Energy Assessor: RED Sustainability

Photographer: Adam Gibson / @adam.gibson.photo

From the Architect: "On a tight suburban block, Pop Top is a city pad perched on top of an existing garage. This project is an exercise in balancing a sense of spatial generosity in a small footprint while maintaining the privacy of its occupants and surrounding neighbors. Pop Top reflects our client’s personality—sophisticated and always ready to host a party.

"Closely nestled near its neighbors, fine screening allows the building to direct the eye to Kunanyi and Hobart’s Northern Suburbs whilst shielding occupants from looking onto close neighbors. Angled fins extend as a fence demarcating private/public zones, softened by considered planting. The existing double garage and new carport is a shadow underneath, allowing the crisp white addition to float above.

"This project works hard to provide enjoyment through a sculpted internal ceiling, light and shadow throughout the day, pops of color, and framed views."
