A Historic Home by a Frank Lloyd Wright Apprentice Lists for the First Time in Decades

Architect Sim Bruce Richards used cedar, glass, and stone to build the Weinberg Residence high atop a granite peak in San Diego.

Location: San Diego Country Estates, Ramona, California

Architect: Sim Bruce Richards

Year Built: 1980

Price: $1,950,000

Footprint: 3,287 square feet (four bedrooms, three baths)

Lot Size: 1.52 acres

From the Agent: "Listed for $1,950,000, The Weinberg Residence is now for sale after decades of being in the hands of very few owners. Toward the end of architect Sim Bruce Richards’ life and career, he built several large, stunning homes for well-heeled clients. In 1978, Richards (1908-1983), began drawings for Lewis C. Weinberg, the CEO of Fel-Pro, ‘a manufacturer of gaskets, packings and oil seals for automotive and industrial uses’ in Skokie, Illinois. Built 20 years prior to his retirement, the home for Weinberg has been noted as one of the architect’s finest works—one that highlights his partnerships with local artists and artisans."

In 1978, Lewis C. Weinberg commissioned Richards to design what would serve as the retirement retreat for him and his wife, Violet. The home has since been acclaimed as one of the architect's finest works and has only changed hands a couple of times.
