A Snow-White Home in Rural Ontario Freshens Up the Farmhouse Look

BLDG Workshop punctuated the crisp, clean-lined residence with a chimney and guest suite clad in ruddy Cor-Ten steel.

Houses We Love: Every day we feature a remarkable space submitted by our community of architects, designers, builders, and homeowners. Have one to share? Post it here.

Project Details:

Location: Caledon, Ontario, Canada

Designer: BLDG Workshop / @bldg_workshop

Footprint: 3,800 square feet

Photographer: Doublespace Photography / @2spacephoto

From the Designer: "The rural area of Caledon, Ontario, has a long history of fishing, equestrianism, and farming. Farming in the early 1900s caused erosion over an area of the topography, creating an otherworldly feature that became know as the Cheltenham Badlands. When farming ceased in the 1930s the area became a popular destination and is now a protected heritage site.

"Within the vicinity of this remarkable area, BLDG Workshop created a home that creates a connection to the beautiful, rolling hills of the rural countryside. Glass expanses frame views to the most natural and unaltered parts of the landscape, while intentionally obscuring less desirable and obtrusive built forms.

"It was a client request to make the home entirely white (even the windows!), but we added a couple shocks of color that make a playful nod to the nearby Badlands. The main level of the mostly single-story home only features two bedrooms, focusing rather on expansive public spaces (kitchen, dining room, living room). However, more bedrooms are found in an above-grade basement and a self-contained guest suite."
