The iPhone 18 Pro is a reward for those who waited

The iPhone 18 Pro is one of Apple’s most iterative releases in years. While it introduces impressive camera improvements, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a significantly faster chip, not much else has changed. Paired with the price hike, many frequent buyers will hold onto their iPhone 17 Pro models and skip upgrading this year.

But that’s the thing about iPhones: You don’t need to buy a new one every year. Most users aren’t on a yearly upgrade cycle, and the incremental enhancements stack up to create a truly transformative experience for anyone with an older device. In particular, if you’re still rocking an iPhone 14 Pro or earlier, buying an iPhone 18 Pro will feel like a whole new device.

A smartphone’s display plays a key role in the overall user experience, as it’s the component we directly interact with the most. The iPhone 14 Pro retired the notch in favor of the Dynamic Island back in 2022, revolutionizing the screen cutout and making it more functional. The iPhone 18 Pro goes a step further, shrinking the cutout to accommodate up to three Live Activities in the Dynamic Island instead of two.

While you probably won’t notice the slightly bigger display, with an extra 0.2 inches, bringing the Pro to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max to 6.9 inches, you’ll definitely notice the slimmer bezels, which are practically invisible compared to the 14 Pro.

Other notable display upgrades over the 4-year-old phone include a 1,000-nit increase in peak outdoor brightness, with the iPhone 18 Pro maxing out at 3,000 nits. The screen is now also guarded by the Ceramic Shield 2, which has quite literally prevented my iPhone 17 Pro Max from attracting any visible scratches after a full year of unprotected daily use.

Sharper by a long shot

The advanced cameras are one of the main reasons many users opt for an iPhone. The iPhone 14 Pro already offers a highly capable Pro camera system, but the 18 Pro models take it to the next level.

For starters, the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses’ resolutions have both been bumped from 12MP to 48MP, matching that of the main lens. This upgrade allows you to take higher-resolution photos, minimize pixelation in low-light environments, and crop more flexibly. Plus, you’re getting up to 8x optical zoom, a significant increase from the 14 Pro’s 3x limit. That’s not to mention that the digital zoom now goes all the way to 40x.

Other iPhone 18 Pro rear camera enhancements include a variable aperture for better depth of field and lighting adjustments, granular controls for elements like the shutter speed and white balance, ProRes and Apple Log recording support, wind noise reduction and AutoMix for editing footage audio, better low-light video recording, and much, much more. Those who actively take photos and videos will particularly appreciate all the improvements Apple has made over the past four generations.

The front-facing camera is also greatly improved from the 14 Pro. It now offers an 18MP resolution, Center Stage support for subject tracking during video calls, a square sensor for digital orientation switching, Dual Capture for simultaneous recording using the front and rear cameras, etc.

Aye aye Siri

You probably don’t use Siri much on your iPhone 14 Pro, and that’s understandable—it’s not very good. However, the iPhone 18 Pro brings support for Apple Intelligence, which unlocks a completely rebuilt Siri experience that mimics established AI chatbots, such as Google Gemini. You now get a dedicated Siri app to converse with it, including a native ChatGPT integration. Siri can base its responses on extensive world knowledge, live web results, and the personal data stored on your iPhone—like emails, messages, notes, browsing history, events, and more.

Other neat AI introductions include Visual Intelligence to identify objects you capture, native photo manipulation tools, notification summaries, priority alert detection for Focus modes, surfacing context during calls, and a wide range of text composing and editing options across apps.

Cooler by design

After upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro to an 18 Pro, you’ll notice that the device has been almost completely redesigned. The newer model now features an aluminum back and frame, which makes it less prone to scratches and smudges compared to stainless steel. Coupled with the new vapor chamber, the iPhone 18 Pro can sustain high performance for longer periods without overheating. The back case also has less glass, considerably reducing the risk of cracking if dropped.

Other more noticeable design changes include the switch from a Lightning port for charging and wired data transfer to the universal USB-C connector. You’ll also spot a touch-sensitive Camera Control button on the side to quickly launch the desired camera app and interact with it, along with a mappable Action button that replaces the vintage mute switch.

Trust the processor

It goes without saying that the jump from the iPhone 14 Pro’s 4nm A16 Bionic chip to a 2nm A20 Pro chip introduces a bunch of computational upgrades. In terms of processing, the CPU is now up to 60 percent faster. You also get a superior GPU with two more cores, Neural Accelerators, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. This will significantly boost performance when gaming and editing videos on your iPhone 18 Pro.

 Contrary to common misconception, the performance gains do not negatively impact the battery life. In fact, the iPhone 18 Pro Max boasts the longest iPhone battery life yet. According to Apple, the flagship provides up to 45 hours of video playback on a single charge, a whopping 16-hour increase from the 14 Pro Max’s 29-hour limit. It also accelerates charging when using a compatible adapter, letting you top up 50 percent of the battery in around 15 minutes instead of 35 minutes.
