Macworld
The original Macintosh 128K, famously unveiled in 1984 with an appropriately Orwellian advertising campaign, remains a source of fascination and nostalgia for Apple fans more than 40 years on. And third-party businesses are aware that this fascination can be monetised.
In the past we’ve covered an Apple Watch stand that makes your watch look like a tiny Macintosh, a Windows-based mini PC with a familiar look, and a cute replica of the Macintosh that’s half the height of a Coke can. Now it’s the iPhone’s turn to get a retro Mac-themed makeover, thanks to a new case that’s been created to celebrate Apple’s 50th anniversary.
Spigen’s Classic LS case for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max is available from Amazon for $40. It features the classic matte “stone” color scheme (don’t call it beige!) and time-appropriate detailing. The power button, for example, features the cursive “hello” familiar from the Macintosh interface, and there’s a lanyard slot below the Camera Control that reminds me of the aperture of a 1980s camera. Even the logo calls Apple’s rainbow design to mind.
Spigen
Whereas some manufacturers are coy about their inspirations when creating nostalgic products, Spigen is quite open about the Macintosh theme, posing the case in front of an original Macintosh unit. This suggests that either Apple has given its blessing or that Spigen has very good (or very bad) legal representation. Either way, if this is up your alley, grab it now before stock runs out or Apple gets mad.
