Hi there.
Jason Croft here with Dallas Video Production, where we answer the videographer questions your asking - and a lot more you should be asking.
Alright. So you’re all set to hire a videographer or a production company to create a video or a series of videos of you. Here are five questions you’ll want to ask when evaluating whom to hire.
1. How much experience do you have in this type of production?
This is an important one. Not just how long have they been doing this, but make sure they have experience doing the type of production you need done, or at least very similar. If they’ve shot a lot of student short films but have never interviewed a CEO for a corporate training video, that could be a problem. That can certainly come at a cost. I’ve been creating corporate videos and live events for 25 years. Croft Media is going to be more expensive than the short films person, but we can provide more assurances that the work will be done well.
2. What are your in-house capabilities?
The importance in how they answer really depends on your needs of production. Hiring a company that has every crew member on staff and every piece of equipment you many need in house may not be necessary at all. It’s really common for video production companies to hire trusted freelance crew and get equipment on a per project basis. Now, there are some advantages to going with a company that at least has a physical space, some studios, some equipment. It helps you to know that the company isn’t going to be gone the next day or anything.
3. Are you geographically limited?
This one will depend on your needs. You may have a project that requires travel to four of your company locations or six different countries to capture client testimonials. Having a network of resources around the world is very important and so is being able to travel. Moving a crew and equipment around the world is very different than picking up and taking a trip with your spouse. You want to make sure a company has lots of experience with this.
4. How do you charge?
Not how much do you charge, but how? Typically, production - the shooting of the video - is charged by the day or half-day. Editing is charged by the hour. Some companies will give you an hourly cost to shooting and others will give you a package price for editing your project. It’s just good to ask this before going into a project so that neither side is surprised along the way.
5. Do you help with the creative direction?
This one doesn’t have a right or wrong answer, it simply depends on what you need. You may have all of the creative aspects of your project covered and you just need someone to execute. Be careful though, when hiring, that you don’t bring on someone who is simply an order taker when you’re looking to them for creative ideas and approaches to making your video the best it can be. In addition, this can also apply to the marketing and distribution of your video. For instance, we like to help our clients think through all the ways they could maximize their production efforts and create more video products out of the same production than they originally thought, giving them a chance for more content to share on social and their website.
Those are five questions to start with before hiring your next video production company.
