FOMO can be a powerful marketing tool, but it can also push business owners into bad decisions, rushed automation, unnecessary technology, and endless shiny-object chasing.
In this video, I use the recent 7 Brew experience, along with a few more historic examples, to look at fear of missing out from both sides: how to keep FOMO from driving your business strategy, and how to use urgency, scarcity, deadlines, and customer psychology responsibly in your own marketing.
You’ll learn:
✔️ How FOMO influences business decisions
✔️ When AI and automation become distractions
✔️ Why processes should come before automation
✔️ How to test new tools before investing
✔️ How planning reduces reactive marketing
✔️ How scarcity and urgency drive action
✔️ When limited access increases perceived value
✔️ How social proof influences buying decisions
✔️ Why repeated deadline extensions hurt trust
✔️ How to avoid fake scarcity in marketing
✔️ How to spot trends worth testing
✔️ Where real customer urgency already exists
One of the biggest questions to ask is this:
What do your customers genuinely NOT want to miss?
Key takeaways:
✔️ Don’t let FOMO drive bad business decisions
✔️ Test before you invest
✔️ Plan ahead instead of constantly reacting
✔️ Use urgency responsibly in your marketing
FOMO can be a reason to investigate, but it might not be a reason to invest.
The goal is to understand when a new trend, technology, or opportunity deserves your attention without automatically letting it change your priorities. And when you’re marketing to your own customers, the goal isn’t to manufacture urgency. It’s to understand where urgency already exists and communicate it clearly.
That might mean a real deadline, limited availability, exclusive access, social proof, seasonality, or simply helping your customer understand the cost of waiting.
