- A Russian soldier has been arrested for beating a commander to death, say local reports.
- The man drunkenly beat the captain of a military unit to death during a train journey.
- Both men were part of President Vladimir Putin's military mobilization.
A Russian soldier has been arrested for beating a captain to death, a Russian military court has announced.
According to the court press release, the man, an unnamed senior sergeant, was "in a state of intoxication" when he attacked the officer in the headquarters carriage of a military train at Musashi station in southwest Russia.
Both men were called up to fight in Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a part of President Vladimir Putin's military mobilization, according to the court.
The military commander immediately died from the injuries, the court said in a press release.
A local news report said the soldier was drunk when he launched the assault and faced up to 15 years in prison for the alleged crime.
This is not the first time that Russian soldiers have been involved in drunken brawls.
In September, just as it was announced that soldiers were to be called up from the reserves to active duty, a video on social media, shared by a Belarussian journalist, showed recently mobilized soldiers engaging in a drunken brawl.
The video, shot in the Yuzhno-Kurilsk region in the Sakhalin Oblast, shows men slamming into each other, throwing slurred punches, and shouting. Insider was not able to independently verify it.
Putin's military mobilization has been criticized since it was announced in September, with people saying that some of the men chosen to fight were too old, too young, ill, or untrained.
In late November, regional leaders in Russia wrote to President Putin urging him to declare an end to his mobilization for the war in Ukraine, Insider's Matthew Loh reported.
