Introducing Claire Bartlett, the founder and director of Arden Bookkeeping. A multi-award winner in her industry, her specialty is helping business owners create stable foundations for a triumphant future. Claire is passionate in her support for the bookkeeping industry, working tirelessly to highlight the vital part it plays in supporting the UK economy.
Get to know a bit about Claire before she takes the stage at Accountex London this Spring.
1. How did you get into the bookkeeping?
I began my Career in the finance industry at 18 when I got a temp position as a purchase ledger clerk for a local company. I realised I was actually quite good at it and enjoyed it and that is where my Career began! I remained working in industry over the next 15 years working in every position up till Management Accountant while taking my AAT at evening school. I then set up my own bookkeeping business after having my daughter to gain the flexibility I desired at that time in my life.
2. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the profession?
Take your time and really make sure you understand the basic foundations of bookkeeping. It is so important to understand the implications of every posting you make and the repercussions later down the line if not done correctly. I would also say connect with the community around you as it is so beneficial to have a sounding board to reach out whenever needed.
3. What is the one thing bookkeepers must do to adapt and remain successful?
Technology is such a massive help to Bookkeepers but I do feel there are still some Bookkeepers resisting this. With HMRC’s MTD schemes rolling out there really will be no other option soon than to embrace technology and my advice is the early you can adopt this way of working the better.
4. What one person or business in the finance industry do you really admire and why?
There is no one person or business I individually admire, I am incredibly proud of the industry as a whole and the moves we are making to become such an inclusive, Vital supportive network for both the small businesses of the UK but also each other and the difference we are making for our clients across the country.
5. How important is Accountex to you and the sector?
Accountex live is a fantastic opportunity to continue to grow the connections made throughout the year with other people in the industry but also the suppliers we work so closely with. It is also a key place to learn about the new solutions hitting the market that could continue to improve our offering to our clients. It has such a fun, exciting atmosphere and I leave feeling motivated for the year ahead every time. Alongside that Accountex have some really great content throughout the year which helps me keep up to speed with the latest news and developments within the industry which is such a great help.
