The latest nail in DVDs' coffin is here

This holiday season could be your last chance to stock up on DVDs at Best Buy.
  • Best Buy will stop selling DVDs in stores and online starting in early 2024, according to Variety.
  • Demand for movies on DVD and Blu-Ray is dying as people switch from physical media to streaming.
  • Best Buy also stopped selling CDs in stores a few years ago, but those are still available online.

The DVD is dead, and Best Buy just hammered the final nail into the coffin.

The 2023 holiday season could be the last time you can go into Best Buy and get your hands on a collection of movies. Best Buy announced that it would phase out sales of movies and TV shows on DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs early next year, according to Variety.

"To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago," a Best Buy spokesperson told Variety, "Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover, and enjoy."

The halt on DVD and Blu-Ray sales doesn't include video games, according to Variety.

Over the past decade, the use of subscription-based, on-demand video services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and more has skyrocketed. The number of online video subscriptions in the US surpassed 353 million in 2021, according to the Motion Picture Association.

Even popular streaming services themselves are signaling an end to DVDs. Netflix, which started as a mail-in DVD rental service, has since become a powerhouse in streaming. In August, Netflix announced it would end its DVD rental service to fully focus on streaming.

Still, some movie lovers prefer DVDs over streaming. Some people have large collections of DVDs and believe that physical copies offer a better viewing experience. Those people may be saddened by Best Buy's decision, but Best Buy has been slowly moving away from physical media in general.

For example, in 2018, Best Buy stopped selling CDs in most of its stores. As with movies, many people have turned to streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. Music collectors can still get CDs and vinyls on Best Buy's website but DVD lovers won't be as lucky. Neither DVDs nor Blu-Ray discs will be sold online or in stores after early 2024, according to Variety.

Best Buy has not responded to Insider's request for comment.
