What project could lure a designer away from her stunning studio in a Hawaii forest reserve? For Ginger Lunt, it was the opportunity to renovate a 1964 home by master architect Albert Frey in the heart of Palm Springs.

"A wonderful client of mine inherited the home from her parents," says Lunt. "Since our studio’s work is primarily in Hawaii, it was really inspiring and exciting to have an opportunity to work in a different environment with its own unique natural beauty and cultural landscape."

The 1.5 acre property features an all-native landscape, with sandy soil, tall palms, shrubby smoke trees,

With dramatic views of the San Jacinto Mountains, the site looks like a film setting—and it’s close to the ranch where movie star Cary Grant stabled and rode his own horse. Lunt calls the neighborhood a "wonderful and unusual place" that started out as a working ranch in the early 20th century and has "kept its rustic charm" over the years.

When it’s a bit cooler and the windows can be opened, the home's orientation encourages excellent air circulation. In the summer off-season, when temperatures consistently reach 115 degrees, the home’s windows and doors are covered with insulating material to keep interior temperature as low as possible. To further maximize efficiency, the team upgraded the existing HVAC.

Palm Springs started attracting Hollywood royalty in the 1930s, and they hired some the era’s top architects. Among them, Swiss-born and Le Corbusier–trained Frey brought his functional style, added inspiration from the environment, and became a pioneer of desert modernism.

Before: Despite some necessary maintenance, Lunt wanted to keep the exterior as close to the original as possible.

Before: Studying the 1964 blueprints, Lunt fell in love with Frey’s original plan, the simple lines, and the home’s siting, which takes full advantage of sunlight, cross breezes, and views. Native plants thrive in the sandy soil—including towering fan palms, smoke trees, tumbleweeds, ocotillo, and shrubby cholla cactus.
